Kanchipuram silk saree

Kanchipuram silk sarees are exclusively known for their rich gold borders, big motifs, traditional designs, exclusive colors, and dense fabric in contrast colors. The tradition that is more than 150 years old is purely hand woven from processed silk yarn and “Zari”- a silver silk thread coated in gold colour. Kanchipuram sarees are handwoven from pure mulberry silk. The industry here is only made up of handloom weavers and merchants and does not manufacture silk or any other raw material that goes into the silk saree. The main raw materials are mulberry silk thread, metallic thread (Zari), and dye. This enhances the beauty and the value of the silk saree. The mulberry silk thread comes from the neighboring state of Karnataka and the metallic threads come from Gujarat. But all these materials are brought to Kanchipuram and the skilled artisans weave them on handlooms, creating a unique hand-made work of art in each saree. If the pallu has to be woven in a different shade, it is first separately woven and then delicately joined to the saree using the age-old Korvai method (a technique to interlock the border and pallu with the body). The joint is woven so strongly that even if the saree tears, the border would not detach.

Benaras saree

A Banarasi sari is a sari made in Varanasi, an ancient city which is also called Benares (Banaras). The saris are among the finest saris in India and are known for their gold and silver brocade or zari, fine silk, and opulent embroidery. The saris are made of finely woven silk and are decorated with intricate design, and, because of these engravings, are relatively heavy. Their special characteristics are intricate intertwining floral and foliate motifs, kalga and Bel, a string of upright leaves called jhallar at the outer, edge of border is a characteristic of these saris. Other features are gold work, compact weaving, figures with small details, metallic visual effects, pallus, jal (a net-like pattern), and mina work. The saris are often part of an Indian bride’s trousseau. Depending on the intricacy of its designs and patterns, a sari can take from 15 days to a month and sometimes up to six months to complete. Banarasi saris are mostly worn by Indian women on important occasions like weddings and for important festivals There are four main varieties of Banarasi sari, which includes pure silk (Katan), Organza (Kora) with Zari and silk; Georgette, and Shattir, and according to the design process, they are divided into categories like, Jangla, Tanchoi, Vaskat, Cutwork, Tissue, and Butidar. It is considered a Prized Possession by many women in INDIA
